Compare the direction of the sunrise on December 21...

...with the direction of the sunrise on June 21.

When it rises that much further north in June, it's going to be above the horizon for a lot longer than it would be in December. (These observations are taken from 43 degrees north latitude; if you were close to the equator you wouldn't see as much of a difference!)
