Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday May 4, 2009. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

How to Find The Closest Star To Earth Other
Than Our Sun And The Fabled Southern Cross

For low-latitude viewers in the northern hemisphere, the Southern Cross and Centaurus will skim the southern horizon a couple of hours after sunset in mid-May.

The bright star just to the left of the cross is Beta Centauri, and to the left of that is Alpha Centauri, the closest star to our Sun.
