Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday January 19, 2009. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

The Moon Plays Tag With Venus
And Orion's Two Brilliant Bow Wows!

Look west on late January evenings after sunset to see a young crescent Moon moving closer to Venus every night. Start looking for the Moon close to the horizon on January 27th, when it will be a very slender crescent, and watch over the next few nights as it grows. This view is for January 29th.

Turn around and look southeast to see Orion and his two dogs rising.
