Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday January 5, 2009. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

See Three Cosmic Seasons At The Same Time!

Look west after sunset to see Venus, and say goodnight to the three bright stars of the Summer Triangle. They are setting in the west with the Sun, and won't be up again during darkness until the spring.

Facing north, you can see the Big Dipper asterism of Ursa Major lying low on the horizon, and the Little Dipper and Polaris above. Keep looking up to find the M of Cassiopeia.
