Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday November 18, 2002. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

Our Star Gazer Annual "3 Cosmic Birds For Thanksgiving" Show

The Summer Triangle dominates the summer sky in the northern hemisphere. It crosses the hazy band of the Milky Way, which is split into two near Deneb by a large dust cloud called the Cygnus Rift. The Triangle consists of three of the brightest stars in the sky, each the brightest star in its own constellation. The brightest is Vega, in Lyra. Next in brightness is Altair in Aquila and then Deneb, in Cygnus. This view shows the sky on Thanksgiving weekend at around 7:00 PM, as seen from mid-northern latitudes.
